What this service is

The D-U-N-S Number is a unique nine-digit identifier issued by Dun & Bradstreet that identifies a business entity and anchors its commercial credit file.

In compliance work it is a prerequisite: FDA requires a verifiable unique facility identifier for food facility registration, and the D-U-N-S Number is the de facto accepted identifier.

21 CFR 1.232(a)(2)

Who needs it

Companies preparing FDA food facility or pet food facility registration
Exporters that need a verifiable business identity with U.S. agencies, platforms, or customers
Businesses with no existing D-U-N-S record, or whose company name or address has changed

Prerequisites and sequence

  • No prior license is needed, but application details must exactly match your business license (Chinese and English names, registered address).
  • If you plan to register a food or pet food facility, obtain the D-U-N-S Number first so the registration does not fail verification.

Who holds regulatory responsibility

The applicant is the business itself. We prepare and submit the application and track verification; you are responsible for providing authentic license and contact information.

What usually follows

Common pitfalls

Application details not matching the business licenseChinese/English names and the registered address must exactly match the business license. Mismatches trigger manual verification, stretching the timeline from days to weeks, or get the application rejected.
Sharing one number between company and facilityA D-U-N-S Number identifies the entity at a specific address. If your production facility sits at a different address, it needs its own number, otherwise FDA registration verification may fail.
Not updating the record after a company changeIf you move or rename the business without updating the D-U-N-S record, later FDA registrations or renewals fail verification until the record is corrected first.

FAQ

Is the D-U-N-S Number free?

Dun & Bradstreet offers a free application channel, but it is slower and you must handle verification yourself. Our fee covers application assistance: preparing the information, tracking progress, and ensuring it connects smoothly to your FDA registration.

Can one number cover multiple facilities?

A D-U-N-S Number identifies the entity at a specific address. If your production facility sits at a different address, it generally needs its own number matching the facility address used in FDA registration.

What if our company details changed after we got the number?

The D-U-N-S record must be updated after a name or address change, otherwise FDA verification may fail. We can assist with the record update.
